The SDSU Linux Media Project Foundation @ SDSU Welcome to the new Linux Media Project Foundation at San Diego State University. The development of Linux in Open and Free Forums has had a relatively long history and recognized tradition, since its establishment in the 1990's, in conducting basic and applied research, developing applications and products, providing services models, and playing a leading role in the fields of Information and Communication Technologies. Over the last few years, we have been witnessing the rising, of a planet-wide systems management movement to Linux, particularly consisting of relatively independent, frequently uncooperative, and at some times even hostile hardware components. For example, over the last 20 years, we have seen the growth of the Internet from a 4-node ARPANET prototype, into a planet-wide network used by half a billion of people. During the last five years, we were amazed to witness the phenomenal growth of peer-to-peer file-sharing networks, which, grew up from nonexistent into mass data transfer media encompassing millions of users sharing Terabytes of data. Even more impressive, however, was when we watched how a carefully crafted Linux design conceptual model took over the systems backbone of Industrial Light & Magic and then PDI, both are pre-eminent motion picture studios known for being the first to integrate Linux and Free Software systems into their motion picture development architecture. At the SDSU Linux Media Project Foundation, we are focused on identified and funded projects with corporate sponsors. We are fully engaged with motion picture engineering professionals and government systems technology sponsors, supporting focused research. Activities of our foundation will cover important research and development areas, encompassing new perspectives, emerging fields of media research and technological challenges worldwide. The Linux Media Project at San Diego State University is a research and development project which benefits from off the input from the SDSU Computer Sciences Department and the Department of Film, Television, and New Media. The Project will primarily focus on multimedia applications and tools, focused on a Hollywood approved professional release of Cinelerra and Wireless HD Streaming. We are inviting other Universities and Research Groups to participate with us in this endeavor. We are focused on the integration of Free Software projects such as Cinelerra, L-Server, and Ultra-Wide Screen research and their continued development as media production technologies.
